Dems discharge graft fugitive Nazaruddin

Democratic Party deputy secretary-general Ramadhan Pohan says the party has discharged its former treasurer currently on the hunt for alleged involvement in a bribery case, M. Nazaruddin.
“The party sacked Nazaruddin de jure on Friday of last week. However, the party has discharged him de facto since the first warning letter,” Ramadhan said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com on Monday.
The party issued the first warning letter to Nazaruddin on July 4 and the second on July 18. In the warning letter, the party asked Nazaruddin to return to Indonesia to fulfill the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) summons for investigation of a bribery case linked to the construction of an athletes’ dormitory for the 2011 Southeast Asia Games in Palembang, South Sumatra. Nazaruddin reportedly left Indonesia to avoid the bribery case investigation.
According to the party’s regulation, Nazaruddin has 21 days to answer the letter, which was sent to his house and office at the House of Representatives, otherwise, the party will issue a third letter dismissing him.
Ramadhan said that the 21-day deadline was a procedure.
“The party issues the warning letters to fulfill the administration process as stipulated by Democratic Party regulations,” Ramadhan said.
Previously, from an unknown place, Nazaruddin said he had resigned from the party and as a House of Representatives member. However, the House and the party said that they had not received Nazaruddin’s resignation letter yet.
Ramadhan said the dismissal meant the party was no longer involved with the graft fugitive.
“We are tired of talking about Nazaruddin. Ask the police and the KPK if you want to know more. They are handling Nazaruddin now,” Ramadhan said.
